You've read a little bit about me here, but let me introduce you to the other actors in our little family drama/comedy/romance.
Meet the kindest, most patient man on the planet. We met in college and fell madly in love faster than you can say "teenage hormones." I'll tell our story later in another post.
I love everything about this man. I always tell him he's my favorite, and it's absolutely true. He's brilliant, detailed to a fault, athletic, quiet, and absolutely hilarious if you're fortunate enough to hear his quiet commentary on life. A bit of a perfectionist, which has been really sanctifying considering I'm the Queen of Good Enough. He loves a good book, hot cup of coffee, the occasional pipe, and Jim Gaffigan's humor. He's an artist (drawing and photography), musician (drums and the sweetest tenor you ever did hear), and is becoming increasingly adventurous in taking on home projects.
And he's brave. In a world where so many men disengage or leave, he sticks around and fights for us. He doesn't back down from my crazy and meets me with compassion no matter what I throw at him. He pursues me even in my ugliest moments and loves the children with a tender tenacity I never would have dreamed of. He's the perfect shepherd for this little flock of ours.
Most affectionately called "Bigs" in our home, this little guy is as brilliant as his daddy and as stubborn as me, which has made for quite the parenting journey. He has a valiant little heart, an incredible wit, and an imagination that blows our minds. Right now he's captivated by geography, Star Wars, snakes, and violin. He makes me belly laugh and pull my hair out every day, and I'm honored that I've been given the task to guide this little guy towards manhood. Chocolate banana bread and back rubs are the key to his heart.
This little light is pure sweetness and has been since the day she was born. I even wrote in her baby book at 2 days old that she had a special kindness and elegance about her, and the observation has remained true for 6 years. Sensitive to the feelings of others, compassionate, and loyal, she's a tidy mouse like her daddy and loves to craft with her mommy. This girl will put stickers and glitter on anything, but isn't afraid to get covered in dirt and paint while she's at it. We call her the "fruit bat" since she'll eat her weight in produce and will pass up a cupcake in favor of a strawberry (totally nature and not nurture, I assure you). Quiet and shy, she saves her glow for just the right time.
This child, Lord help me, cracks me up every minute of the day. Even when she's in deep trouble, I have to turn my head to hide my laughter. Those dimples get me every time. She's my snuggler and is generous with her affection to everyone she sees. Her obsessions at the moment are chiefly all things Frozen and any possible form of bacon. She's smart as a whip and absolutely fearless. As a newly appointed "big sister," we're learning that she's very nurturing and protective. She may look dainty, but she's a strong little thing that digs in her roots and shines no matter what field she's in.
Our little snow blossom, this sweet gift is the newest addition to our family. Her pregnancy came as a surprise in the midst of a sad family loss, but the Lord knew just what he was doing in blessing us with this life right when He did. She's bright and determined and is eager to be in the middle of the action. At a year old, she loves to sing and is constantly sharing her favorite renditions of "Twinkle Twinkle" and "Let it Go." Her favorite word is "book" and her favorite person is the dog, whom she lovingly calls "Gucky."
This fur ball has earned his name many times over. The only in his litter to survive Parvo, he now continues to defy death by swallowing whole socks and panties, escaping the fence to go visit his buds, and destroying so much stuff that even my patient husband wants to skin him alive some days. (Figure of speech, people. Don't sick the ASPCA on us.) My mom says he's a living incarnation of a Dr. Seuss creature, which is the most accurate description in the world. He's sweet, loving, and absolutely bonkers. His enthusiasm for life is both draining and inspriring.
So here's our family. We fight, laugh, cry, snuggle, and grow together. There's no one else I would rather have on this road with me than each of them.
